Guide to Root & install Custom Recovery image in OnePlus One Android Phone – How & Why

OnePlus One is one of the latest yet #trending smartphones which gives a tough challenge in terms of specs at least on paper to other flagship smartphones like Galaxy S5, LG G3, Xperia Z2 etc. There’s no doubt that this device comes with the state of the art hardware but for all those who wanted to make the most of this smartphone can root the device and install the custom recovery image so that it can then be optimized with the apps which need root access along with the custom ROM firmwares.

With specs like 5.5 inched screen, 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, 3100mAH of battery, 16/64GB of memory, 13MP Camera etc., we are talking of a super phone here. To complement this super phone, it’s very important for you to make the most of it and for this you need to root the device and install the custom recovery image.
Once you root the device, you can then,
  • Install Apps which need root access,
  • Remove stock / default apps to increase performance,
  • Customize Phone for awesome visual and performance metrics &
  • Install Custom ROM firmware for increased features
So after checking out on what are the essential pre requisites mentioned below, we will be checking out on how you can root your device and install the custom Recovery image.
Essential Pre Requisites:
  • Data in your OnePlus One should be backed up manually with the help of below mentioned steps. Don’t use PC Suites to back up the data as it may not help you restore the data till this update hits for your country.
SMS – Use “SMS Backup & Restore app”,
Contacts – Sync with the Gmail application,
Call Log - Call Log and Restore
Images, Songs, Videos, Files – Copy to internal / External SD Card,
APN and MMS Settings – Note down from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names
  • Enable the USB Debugging Mode in your computer from the path “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging”. Also, the minimum battery life should be a minimum of 70% or else there is a risk of device getting turned Off in the middle of firmware update.
  • Make sure to disable all the antivirus tools in your computer as it may hamper the process of firmware installation.

Procedure to Root and Install Custom Recovery image in OnePlus One Android Phone:
  • Download TWRP Recovery image and SuperUser image in your computer and connect your smartphone to the computer with the help of original USB cable. Extract the TWRP recovery image and rename the “openrecovery-twrp-2.7.0.0-bacon.img” file to “twrp.img”
  • Place the SUperUser Zip package in your device and copy the “twrp.img” file in the “platform-tools” folder.
  • Head over to the folder “platform-tools” and open the command prompt by pressing “Win + R”, enter “cmd” to press enter. In the command prompt, you need to enter the below mentioned command to enter the device in the bootloader mode;
Adb reboot bootloader
  • Now, once the device boots in the bootloader mode, you now need to enter the below mentioned command;
Fastboot boot twrp.img
Fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
  • Once the TWRP image is flashed successfully, you now need to enter the below mentioned command for rebooting the device;
Fastboot reboot
Adb reboot recovery
  • After getting into TWRP menu, tap the Install button and select UPDATE-SuperSU-vx.xx.zip file. Confirm installation by sliding the confirmation slider and wait till SuperSU is flashed to your phone.
  • Up next, you need to select reboot option from the System options. To check on whether the device is rooted or not, download the “Root Checker” app from the Google PLAY Store.
Note: If the device gets into the boot loop sequence or say gets stuck in the welcome screen, just long press the power button & reboot the device to re follow the insturctions.
